We are excited to unveil the first of the four cultural collections that help ECEs, students, children, and families to learn about the four historical cultures of Nova Scotia. With the input of the Gaelic community, we collected and organized books for children and adults, artifacts, music, and hands on materials that invite an exploration and highlight different aspects of our shared heritage in Nova Scotia. This collection was curated by Kenneth Mackenzie, Shay MacMullin, Eamag Dhòmhnullach, and Erin MacKinnon and funded by the Department of Gaelic Affairs. You can see all materials in our online catalogue by searching for 'Gaelic'.
The books for adults highlight stories and the culture of the Gaelic people and books for children (in both languages) provide a playful invitation to exploring the language and the popular tales and beliefs.
Each hands-on activity has an info card with historical and cultural references serving as a starting point of researching the topic further. For example, here is the part of the info card that describes a traditional Ceilidh. The materials include dress up clothes and a tea set to have your own ceilidh in a classroom. And since you will need to play some music, feel free to borrow a CD player and CDs featuring contemporary artists from Cape Breton who show their mastery of singing in Gaelic and playing a fiddle, piano, guitar, or bag pipes!
Stop by or arrange for a pick up of other materials from the collection so that children can bring to life stories about fairies, mermaids, Highland homesteads, and even a milling frolick!
