• listen carefully to children’s attempts to hypothesize and expand on their thinking though conversation and questioning 

Language & Communication Objectives: 

• children engage with a variety of texts and gain meaning from them. 
• children begin to understand how symbols and patterns work 

Strategies: 

• educators read and share a range of books and other texts with children 
• educators engage children in discussions about books and other texts that promote consideration of diverse perspectives 

• educators provide opportunities for children to engage with familiar and unfamiliar culturally constructed stories and texts 
• educators draw children’s attention to symbols and patterns in their environment, and talk about patterns and relationships, including the relationship between letters and sounds 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of this seminar participants will be able to: 

• Identify two characteristics associated with quality in picture books. 
• Reflect on areas of strength and areas for growth in the classroom library. 
• Recognize the important role adult interactions with books plays in deepening the experience and connection of young children to the content. 
• Identify ways to increase access to quality picture books.

The quiz will consist of questions about the videos and recommended reading. 

Completion of the quiz and self-reflection exercise will automatically initiate a review of your submission and, if the work has been completed, the issuance of your certificate of completion.
